Merry Christmas & a Healthy New Year

Going Strong....

Three years ago after suffering with a pressure ulcer I designed a positional foot cushion.

I made many prototypes out of different materials until I came up with my final design. It was looked at by a leading tissue viability nurse who thought the idea sound. Ideal for home use. It is lightweight, versatile and washable. It has since been used for other parts of the body and I am very proud that I came up with my idea.
After I went through a period of doubt I found that  people have bought these and are finding them as useful as myself.

They are limited to me and you can only find them
in my Folksy shop.

One large pile of Footers ready for packaging.
New bags arrived today, toppers printed, labels done
and ready for go..............!

Off to the Post...

It's been busy these last few weeks at Katrina Krafts.
Things have been flying from my shop and my Footers have been no exception.

My Footers are a positional foot cushion that helps alleviate pressure ulcers. Designed by myself to solve a problem that I had.

They are ideal for the elderly or people that have limited movement/post surgery/arthritis sufferers.

Simple to use, versatile, lightweight, machine washable and can be used in numerous positions ie under elbow, under feet, between knees etc

The filling complies with BS5852 under the Fire & Furnishings (Fire)(Safety)Regulations 1988

Dilemma

Two years ago after suffering with a pressure ulcer I designed a positional foot cushion.

I made many prototypes out of different materials until I came up with my final design. It was looked at by a leading tissue viability nurse who thought the idea sound. Ideal for home use. It is lightweight, versatile and washable. It has since been used for other parts of the body and I am very proud that I came up with my idea.

However, I am finding it very hard. It somehow doesn't sit well with me. I would imagine there will be people who couldn't give a moments thought that the materials can be playing a small part in the oceans plastic soup.

Profit is king!

Yes I had hoped I would make a profit with these cushions and I have sold them to people who have greatly benefited from them.
Myself included.

But the item is washable and the component parts are contributing a small part to the overall 'plastic soup'.

What do I do?

Ignore it I can't. We mustn't put our heads in the sand and hope it will go away because it won't.

I thank you for reading this.

Your skin is normally kept healthy being supplied through tiny blood vessels under the surface.
Prolonged pressure on certain areas can restrict the blood supply and if not monitored can easily become a pressure ulcer.
I had a health problem that prevented me lying on my side, so the constant pressure on my heels meant I had a pressure ulcer forming. They are very painful and if you cannot move around you are in trouble. I have worked within orthopaedic areas and was well aware of what can happen. I tried numerous methods and none were satisfactory for me.

So late one night I had a Eureka moment and decided to make myself something. This simple but effective foot cushion was the accumulation of numerous prototypes and I have now been using it for over a year.

After further research I submitted my design to the Intellectual Property Office and on 31st March 2016 I was granted a Certificate of Design for my Foot Cushion.

I use mine daily - it does not cure pressure ulcers, but alleviates the pressure allowing me a good nights sleep. It is a simple to use and machine washable.

It gets used in bed every night, if I am sitting of an evening with my feet up and has even travelled in my suitcase with me.
It is ideal for the elderly in a home situation.

Why Not?

Despite the growing knowledge of pressure ulcers, the impact on the elderly is quite dramatic.

There is growing evidence that an elderly person who is immobile can have the beginnings of a pressure ulcer within at least 4 hours.
The top picture is a grade 1 pressure ulcer and you can see it left unobserved it can deteriorate. Therefore, prevention is foremost.

So why not try my Footer. This was designed by me when I had a pressure ulcer. I was in a position where I could only sleep on my back, my heels began to ulcerate and they were extremely painful and I couldn't get comfortable on a solid mattress or cushion.
After several prototypes I came up with my 'Footers' positional cushion. It was a great help to me. It gave me the chance to reposition myself with ease, alleviate pressure and at length they began to go. I am not saying they are a cure, but I know from personal experience they did a very good job.
I have since patented my design and have started to sell then via my online shop. Though they were originally designed with feet in mind I am finding that they are being used for arthritis and general comfort.

They originally came in plain yellow, but recently I have introduced them with a soft fleece side in yellow and now in pale blue. So if you know someone at home or in residential care who would benefit from some gentle comfort and relief then why not give my 'Footers' a try.
